EYE HEALTH 101… Cataracts

Senior woman trying on eyeglassesWhen our bodies age, things we take for granted can start to slow down or diminish. Eyes are no different– they are complicated organs that can develop issues and conditions that make life more difficult.

Cataracts, for example, are an extremely common problem among the older segments of the population. Read on for the Vision Gallery’s crash course on the causes and consequences of cataracts.

WHAT ARE… Cataracts?

When a cloud develops in the lens of an eye, it is called a cataract. This clouding limits and can completely obscure a sufferer’s vision. Glare and slanting light can be very difficult for those with cataracts and the condition cannot be reversed. Luckily, there are very effective and convenient treatments with a nearly universal success rate.

The lens of the eye works with the cornea to focus light in on the retina. A clouded lens means the visual input isn’t clear– the brain cannot correct this issue.

WHAT CAUSES… Cataracts?

Aging is the primary cause of cataracts and it is extremely common among the elderly. Trauma, environmental factors and other issues can occasionally create conditions that promote cataracts. As with many eye conditions, genetics plays a role in your vulnerability to cataracts.

TREATING… Cataracts

The only successful treatment is surgical, but it boasts a near-perfect success rate and most cataract sufferers are eligible. The eye surgeon will remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial one– resulting in restored and often better vision than before. The operation commonly allows patients to return home in the same day, as long as they don’t drive themselves.
